Initial plan:
11 bands Friday, 16 bands Saturday, 12 bands Sunday
What actually happened:
4 bands Friday:
-Missed Umoja Orchestra and Virgins due to absurdly long registration line (MORE STAFF/VOLUNTEERS AT REGISTRATION PLEASE!!! THAT SHIT SUCKED!)
-Went home to get ready, ended up eating chili and doing jello shooters at my neighbor's Halloween party until 10 or so, thus skipping a rack of bands I'd planned to see.
-Caught Sista Sekunden, Mehkago NT, Maruta, and By The Horns at 1982- each one amazing in its own right. Passed out, sore and drunk, after a late-night five star session.
12-13 ish bands Saturday:
-Took my sweet time getting downtown to the shows, thus missing most of In Defence. Caught just enough of them to be pissed about missing the rest of the show.
-Left the Atlantic to go walk around get some coffee, consequently missing FC5 because the Atlantic was at capacity (heard some of them through the wall, though). Got in for a smashing good time at Ruiner, then had to bail to go see Coalesce because my initial plan to see Static Radio and Cloak/Dagger was stymied by schedule changes, and Coalesce had priority.
-Coalesce.
-Walked right into Common Grounds for Armalite, but then decided to hang out outside, eat some five star, and make my way to the kickstand. I had eaten some fungus, and just wasn't feeling the vibe at Common Grounds.
-Saw a hawk on a lightpost on the way to the Kickstand, trying to catch some of the smaller birds slipping, while a few of them flew around the hawk's head to fuck with it. Finally saw the hawk swoop down from the lightpost, but couldn't make out whether it got anything.
-Saw Alligator at the Kickstand, while chugging cans of OE from the Hobo Mart. Amazing new band, great BYOB venue with a punx as fuck parking lot to chill in.
-Realized that I could easily just pass out on some concrete by then, sore as fuck and sleepy as all get-out. Gradually psyched myself up, and pushed back on up the road to The Venue. Missed Paint it Black in the process.
-Municipal Waste. Holy fucking shit.
-Now REALLY beat to hell, I embarked on an expedition to the backstage lounge. It was a chilly bike ride across the wasteland of South Main Street, and by the time I got to Backstage Lounge, I felt like I had arrived in Valhalla. A proprietor with long white hair directed me around the side of the building, where two cute bouncer girls told me to put my ID away. I then made my way through a cozy redneck poolhall to the stage area, where I sat down on a comfy booth seat not ten feet from the stage, and proceeded to take in Colossus, Funks Inc, and Blacksnake. I had intended to go back up to Common Grounds for NMDS, but I was held hostage by the Backstage Lounge, in conjunction with sore muscles and mind-altering chemicals. Also, got to hear "crazy train" on the jukebox.
-Sprawled out in the grass next to one of the artificial ponds on the east side of Main Street. A passing cyclist told me to be careful, cause gators live in that pond. I believed that I had defied death for a little while, until I remembered that it was too chilly for gators to be doing much of anything besides sitting very still.
-Stopped in at George's for Mose Giganticus, where, having just regained feeling in my tongue after previous dancing-related injuries, I managed to chomp on it one last time.
-Made it to 1982 for Shark Pants.
Sunday:
-Several days of inadequate calorie comsumption and running around like a maniac had taken their toll. I took my sweet time eating an enormous breakfast combined with copious quantities of white wine, weed, and Old Style. Heard a random house party down the street, and ran over to it when I heard a band covering Waiting Room. No idea who the band was, but it confirmed my general suspicions that house parties tend to involve a whole lot of kids in hoodies standing around sipping cheap beer. Jump up, jump up, and get down, people.
-Went to market street expecting to have missed Jawsome (gotta eat, though), but found out that I had also completely missed Religious as Fuck and Deep Sleep, due to schedule anomalies. Saw Affirmative Action Jackson, who were great, but apparently unable to fill a 1/2 hour set time. (They're called "covers," guys.)
-Made my way to 1982 to the Brokedowns, also to play some nintendo. Ended up at the skate jam at Tim and Terry's, where I was regaled with musical selections from "welcome to the terror dome" and "19 naughty 2," among others.
-Black Tusk and American Cheeseburger at Market street. Fuckin A.
-Despite the orange that the lead singer of American Cheeseburger so generously shared with the crowd, I now needed to eat in order to combat the spins and a general sense of faint sickliness. As result of a Flaco's run, I missed Triclops!. On returning to Market Street for Assholeparade, I encountered the most frustrating shut-out of the weekend.
-I went to see the second set of The Ergs!, along with a rack of other people who had also been shut out of Assholeparade.
-Ended with Leatherface, wandered around town a bit before going home and passing the fuck out for 12 hours.
