How about "Dude, the Fest is even more fun than being on 'Best Week Ever.'"

Does anyone know if Fest 8 will be on halloween weekend again? (10/30 - 11/1).
I'm apparently going to Mexico from 10/17 until 10/24, so if Fest 8 winds up being over the weekend of 10/17 or 10/24 instead of 10/31 I'll have to make sure the flight goes from mexico to gainesville instead of home, but I don't wanna book the flight until I know so if anyone can help me out asap i'd appreciate it

Sorry. It is the only holiday I give a shit about at all. I like to get dressed up A LOT. I'm a huge horror nut and like to get all my FX stuff out and do myself up for hours to go out that night. I'm not about to do that and get fake blood all over my camera gear now or black out from heat exhaustion in a costume at the Fest. I only had a mask on last year and couldn't bear it. And Gville has always been known for having AWESOME Halloween tribute shows and costume contests. It was a big deal for a long time. The shows would last the whole weekend and day of. Black Sabbath, Misfits, Iron Maiden, AC/DC. Which is impossible now with all the venues occupied and/or those musicians playing the Fest in other bands. IF those tribute bands still played at the Fest I'd be stoked. I know nobody else that looks forward to the Fest cares but me. I realize this. But there are also different scenes in Gville that don't attend the Fest that have very few options of places to do their Halloween shows/contests when this happens. They most certainly feel as if the holiday has been taken away from them completely. And I really liked having the weekend before Halloween for the Fest, that way I get really enjoy myself on Halloween. I feel like I'm working during the Fest and don't really get to enjoy myself except at the after-parties.

not to make you feel any more upset about it but the rough schedule for the 2010 UF Football season has the Florida/Georgia game being on Halloween weekend again

Please don't take over Halloween weekend again. i say this a huge fan of Halloween and as someone who celebrates it in Gainesville.
From my observation the majority of Fest-goers do not dress up, much less even care that it is Halloween. Because all local live venues are taken over by shows, there are no options for Halloween-themed events anywhere. Additionally, alternate Halloween-themed shows have no chance of happening because all the venues are taken up. Even house parties end up being Fest-themed, without even a hint of the Halloween spirit. The Halloween-themed events that used to happen here in the past no longer exist.
Why do the organizers keep planning it for Halloween weekend? i would imagine Gainesville is pretty much the only place in the U.S. where you can't do anything Halloween-related on Halloween weekend(!).
If there's an equivalent of a Halloween Grinch, The Fest is it. It does not have to be this way. Please reconsider.

Please reconsider. it's not like they do it over Halloween weekend on purpose just to try and capitalize on that. It's always the same weekend as the Florida/Georgia football game as it's by far the most convenient for all the clubs and business involved with the event. All of the frats and sororities along with tons of other students leave by the bus load clearing out a huge part of the downtown area. Clubs and food establishments go from having a weekend around the same as a really slow time in the summer to having one of the busiest weekends of the year. Also I saw a huge amount of people that dressed up last year and a lot of bands that either dressed up or did cover sets at after parties and stuff. I understand why it upsets some people that it falls on the same weekend but from a planning aspect I really can't see a more perfect time than the Florida/Georgia game weekend to hold an event the size of The Fest.

As an out of towner, I have to say that was the best part to me. It was nice to have to try struggle through gaggles of college kids hanging out on the weekend who weren't involved with Fest. It really makes it seem like Gainesville is just like Fest year round...*shrug* As far as Halloween goes, I could go either way...I always fail at my big costume ideas anyways, so throwing something simple together for Fest is kind of nice, and cover sets are always fun.

I have yet to see one single tribute set/band play Fest for Halloween. How am I always missing this all these years? And I must miss most of the costumes too.

I saw the cover bands two years ago at Common Grounds and it was awesome. There were lots of costumes too, but I do suppose that was the year that Halloween was on a weekday.

Jeremy hits the nail on the head here. I personally hate that it is on Halloween too but it really is the only weekend that is feasible for us to have the Fest. If they were to move the Florida/Georgia game to a different weekend we would move the Fest.

i've been wanting to go to the fl/ga game one of these years - hopefully to see someone die - but just can't bring myself to miss the Fest.
but for real, how cool would it be if all of a sudden you bump into some crazed uberfan like hacking away at some other crazy fan, like with face paint and shit? lol.
